Volunteer
Strong communities are connected communities. They often feature high levels of participation and at Sorrento Community Centre we understand that, by working together with others, much more can be achieved.
Volunteers play an essential and integral role in the work of the Centre and we simply could not achieve our objectives without the willing, tireless work of our valued volunteers. They are a building block in strengthening our community, and a way to create and maintain networks of support among the members of the wider community.
In return, the Centre aims to provide a range of opportunities such as:
-
Support for social, learning, cultural and economic opportunities
-
Personal experience and satisfaction
-
Increased skills and confidence
-
Leadership opportunities
-
Support to move on to study and paid employment
-
Enjoyment being part of something worthwhile
Testimonial
Volunteer Board Member Testimonial
"It was November 2019, and I rented a house in Sorrento to commence my new journey into a transition to retirement. This was going to be my sea change to one of the most beautiful parts of Victoria. After completing my move from Melbourne in February 2020, I headed straight for the Sorrento Community Centre to find out what the area had to offer me in the form of activities. I joined the Savvy's, enrolled in botanical drawing, and enquired about other activities that would fit into my new semi-retired life.
A great friend I already had down this way; Brian Stacey encouraged me to join him on the board of the centre. I submitted my application and was graciously accepted as a board member. What a great way to get involved in my new community.
March 2020 and COVID hit the world. So, from moving in and until getting really active in my new community I had one month. Not a great way to start.
However, I have been so lucky to have remained on the board over the past two and a half years. In that time, I have shared the great experience of seeing the centre go from strength to strength. The board and the centre staff have continued to develop its strategic plan and put in place operational plans that continue to enhance the programs offered. New and exciting programs have been started, The Dementia Café, Pickle Ball, and collaboration with the Spirit of Sorrento, to name but a few. The Early Learning Centre (ELC) has recently undergone an independent review and while that will provide a strong and reliable source of information, facts and recommendations for the future, the ELC continues to provide the best care for our very young community and their families.
The CEO, Greg Hilton has taken the baton from Heather Barton AM to continue to provide exceptional leadership and community engagement within our community. The staff at the centre are exceptional and give far and beyond their paid roles to make the centre inclusive and friendly to all.
Thank you to my colleagues on the board. You are exceptional hard-working volunteers who actively support the community through your tireless efforts to make the centre a hub of activity and connection for all.
It is therefore with the deepest regret that I leave the board as I have to leave the area.
Sad but true, as it is hard to leave even if it is only to Mount Martha. Everyone keeps telling me I will return so let’s hope that is true. I do know this. I will always feel welcome in Sorrento and will be back as much as I can.
Many thanks for the warmth, friendship and wonderful experience of being a part of the Sorrento Community Centre."
